Recommend Provisional Teaching

Declared dependencies and lock files help collaborators rerun analyses and distinguish environment changes from changes in scientific results.

Provisional positions are editorial proposals awaiting group review.

Getting started

Keep a project’s dependencies and setup instructions alongside its code. Use an environment manager to create a separate environment, record dependency versions, and commit the environment definition and lock file when available.

Check the setup on a clean environment before sharing an analysis. Record operating-system requirements and any external tools too: a list of Python packages alone may not capture everything needed to rerun the work.
