Explore Provisional Teaching

Apptainer makes it practical to move complex scientific software between laptops, workstations, and high-performance computing systems without asking researchers to rebuild every dependency by hand.

Provisional positions are editorial proposals awaiting group review.

Common use cases

  • Package analysis pipelines with their operating-system dependencies
  • Run reproducible software environments on shared Linux systems and clusters
  • Distribute command-line tools for collaborators without manual setup

Getting started

Apptainer packages a Linux software environment into a container image that can be run on many different systems. It is especially useful when a research workflow depends on operating-system packages, compiled tools, or a careful combination of Python and non-Python software.

Why It Matters in Research Workflows

Containers help make the boundary around an analysis explicit. Instead of documenting a long list of setup steps, researchers can define the environment once and rerun it later on another machine. Apptainer is widely used in academic computing because it is designed for multi-user systems and does not require the same privileges as some container runtimes.

In Our Teaching

We use Apptainer when teaching portable software delivery for scientific Python projects, especially when learners need to move from local scripts to shareable command-line tools or pipeline steps. See the course material on containerizing projects with Apptainer.
